Ryan Walsh is a Licensed Professional Counselor at the Center for NeuroWellness, where he brings a wealth of experience and expertise in mental health care. He specializes in treating adolescents and adults with a variety of mental health disorders, including anxiety, mood disorders, psychotic conditions, developmental challenges (such as ADHD and ODD), conduct issues, trauma, and co-occurring substance use disorders.
Ryan’s academic journey began at William Paterson University, where he graduated with high honors, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology. His passion for mental health led him to pursue graduate studies at The College of New Jersey, where he earned a master’s degree in counselor education with a specialization in substance use counseling. It was during his time in graduate school that Ryan launched his career in mental health, beginning in partial hospitalization programs where he worked with individuals facing severe and persistent mental illness. He then shifted to working with clients experiencing co-occurring substance use disorders, which formed the foundation of his deep understanding of integrated mental health and substance use treatment.
After five years of direct care, Ryan served as Program Manager for a mobile outreach program shortly after earning his clinical license as a drug and alcohol counselor. He later advanced to Program Director of a residential program providing mental health respite for individuals with severe mental illness. With his licensure, Ryan transitioned to providing outpatient services including individual psychotherapy, community outreach, and care coordination. His experience in both direct care and program management has honed his ability to facilitate effective group therapy and foster group support.
Throughout his career, Ryan has utilized a variety of therapeutic techniques, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), family systems theory, rational-emotive behavior therapy (REBT), motivational interviewing, strength-based approaches, and existential therapy. His approach to care is rooted in humanistic principles, recognizing the individual as the expert in their own life experiences and emphasizing their inherent worth. His dedication to empowering clients and his holistic approach to care make him an integral part of the Center for NeuroWellness team, where he continues to help individuals build healthier, more fulfilling lives.
Ryan grew up along the Jersey Shore, enjoying beach trips and crabbing, but he also loved escaping to the Pocono Mountains for camping and skiing. A fitness enthusiast, Ryan has completed two Tough Mudder runs and the Spartan Trifecta in 2018. He’s also a Certified Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor at the Ocean County YMCA.
